Based in Kororāreka (Russell) — the Bay's most historic and characterful town, and a place of deep significance in Ngāpuhi history — Kōtare Quest offers a genuinely local perspective that no group tour can replicate.

Bay of Islands — Our Place

Six hundred years of mana moana.

Long before the name "Bay of Islands" appeared on any European chart, this place was home to Ngāpuhi, the largest iwi in Aotearoa New Zealand, for over six centuries. Every headland, reef, and island carries a name, a story, and a genealogy reaching back through generations.

We operate on these waters with deep respect for Ngāpuhi as the tangata whenua — the people of the land and sea. The name Kōtare Quest honours the sacred kingfisher: patient, precise, a guardian of the coast, and in Māori tradition, a bird with the power to calm the sea.

He mihi ki ngā tangata whenua

"Ko Ngāpuhi te iwi.
Ko Bay of Islands te moana.
Ko te kōtare te manu."

Ngāpuhi is the people. The Bay of Islands is the sea. The kōtare is the bird.

Skipper's Outlook

"Light north-easterlies this morning with a small swell — excellent conditions across the Bay. A great day for fishing or a full-day cruise. Waxing moon favours snapper on the incoming tide."

Guest Stories

What our guests say.

"We had the most incredible day. The skipper took us to a beach we never would have found on our own — completely empty, crystal clear water. Exactly what we were after."

Sarah & James

Auckland, NZ

"Caught three snapper before 9am. The local knowledge is unreal. Already planning our next trip. Worth every dollar."

Mike Thornton

Wellington, NZ

"We hired the boat for a corporate team day and it was a massive hit. Relaxed, professional, and genuinely beautiful. The Bay of Islands from the water is something else."

Rachel Chen

Sydney, Australia
